Let's face it. Going to college can be stressful and extremely expensive.
KCE.Life’s Holistic Advising was created to help students understand and navigate their own career path. This path starts with understanding one’s self – being informed of one’s self allows one to determine their options. This is for most people the purpose of going to college: to prepare the student for their future. A recent Gallop report shows that having a clear work related motivation before a student decides on an educational pathway helps booster college completion rates.
Only two decades ago college was as much about preparing the student to be an adult as it was to prepare the student for a career. During this time students could explore their options, change majors, and graduate with any degree. Simply earning a college degree was required for most employment opportunities. Students studied what interested them, and although they graduated with additional unnecessary credits, were still able to begin their careers without insurmountable debt.
Two shifts have occurred over the past twenty years that have made the above approach problematic. The first is the price of education has skyrocketed. The second is employers are becoming significantly more selective in their hiring practices.
Did you know?
80% of students entering college have not selected a major?
AND
50% of students change their major after the first year?
Two decades ago changing majors and extra credits did not come with the burden it does today. Studying anything of interest is good for the undecided student as long as there exists an understanding of the true cost of exploration. Most students graduate with an extra 12 credits. In just tuition costs alone this is an extra $6K to $18K in tuition. As these extra credits often affect the timing of the degree completion, they amount to extra fees, significantly increasing the overall cost of the degree. Having an extra $26K worth of college debt for unnecessary credits is not unheard of. This debt is in addition to the debt already taken on for the degree. This becomes a real financial burden for the student six months after college when loan repayment begins.

59% of college students will graduate?
AND
6 years is the average time to complete a degree?
